8th of October was the Academic Ceremony at BTH with promotion of PhD’s and installation of professors among other things on the agenda.

From Product Development Research Lab and the research subject of Mechanical Engineering we were very happy to see the installation of two new professors in Marco Bertoni, and Sophie Hallstedt.

We also had three Mechanical Engineering PhD’s getting their hats; Eskil Andreasson, Md Shafiqul Islam, and Johan Pilthammar. In collaboration with Applied Health Technology via professor Tobias Larsson we had the PhD Shahryar Eivazzadeh Kaljahi.

Two days of installation talks, ceremonial activities and ending with a nice party friday evening is never a bad thing! Congrats all who received their honours during the ceremony!

Marco Bertoni: “From ‘cost per kill’ to sustainable innovations: transforming Value-Driven Design research”

Engineering designers are faced with a number of decisions every day, all having a minimum common denominator or goal: that of increasing the overall ‘value’ of the system being designed – improving its functions and appeal while minimizing its costs. The research stream of Value-Driven Design (VDD) wants to understand how ‘value’ can be modelled and visualized in the engineering decision making process, to guide early stage generation and selection of system concepts. While having its roots in military applications – being applied to measure the affordability of weapons systems – VDD is mutating its purpose and form to become a major item in the engineering toolbox, guiding the development of innovative solutions for a sustainable society.”

Sophie Hallstedt: Hållbar produktutveckling – varför är det så svårt?

Produktutvecklingsföretag spelar en nyckelroll i samhällets övergång till hållbarhet. Samtidigt är hållbarhet också allt viktigare för företagets konkurrenskraft, till exempel på grund av förändrade kundpreferenser och ökade utsläppskostnader. Företag behöver strategiskt överväga både ekologiska- och sociala aspekter vid sidan av ekonomiska aspekter i utvecklingsprocessen för nya produkter och tjänster. Samtidigt vet vi att utrymmet av möjligheter kommer att minska med tiden så länge vi fortsätter i det ohållbara samhällets riktning. Så hur kan företag komma med nya innovationer som kan ge dem konkurrensfördelar? Och vad är trenderna inom industrin och utmaningar relaterade till dessa, som gör att ett strategiskt långsiktigt perspektiv och en systemsyn är viktig? Hållbar produktutveckling är ett forskningsområde vid Blekinge Tekniska Högskola som fokuserar på hur man stödjer företag att integrera och genomför ett strategiskt hållbarhetsperspektiv i företagens produktinnovationsprocesser från strategisk-, taktisk- och operationell nivå. Forskningen strävar efter att ge svar på hur företag kan påskynda utvecklingen av lösningar med hög hållbarhetsprestanda i kombination med andra värden och risker
