UV and Air pollution smartwatch for children

Programme: Mechanical Engineering, class of 2015 and 2016

Course: MT2556 Extreme Product-Service Innovation

Corporate partner: Health & Sports Technology Initiative

Challenge: Improve todays smart watches by either improve the algorithm, sensors, software or finding new, unexplored things to measure in a smart watch.

Solution: A smart watch for children and an app their parents. The smartwatch will analyse air pollution and uv-radiation that will be sent to the smartphone app to help parents protect their children from dangerous environments.

Impact:The increased knowledge and ways for parents to monitor their children´s exposure to dangerous environments could decrease the chances for the children to get, for example, skin cancer or other diseases.

Prototypes:

Prototype 1: Can read and display pulse. Was tested to see how an Arduino could be implemented with different sensors. The display can show 6 different values. A UV sensor was also added to the prototype later.
Components:
Arduino nano
Heart rate sensor ky-039
Oled 128×64 (Adafruit_SSD1306)
Powerbank och usb cable
UV sensor: ML8511 (GY-8511)

Prototype 2: Tested different interfaces on peoples with a real smartwatch. To get a better understanding of how to present the radiation and air quality data to the customer.

Prototype 3: Added two gas sensors to our prototype to test how to the data could be used and to see how it would be implemented in our solution.

Components:
Arduino nano
Heart rate sensor ky-039
Oled 128×64 (Adafruit_SSD1306)
Powerbank och usb cable
UV sensor: ML8511 (GY-8511)
Gas sensors: MQ-3 and MQ-135

Prototype 4: Tests with battery and different Arduino, to see if it was possible to reduce the size to make it fit on the arm.

Components:
Arduino pro mini
Oled 128×64 (Adafruit_SSD1306)
UV sensor: ML8511 (GY-8511)
Air quality sensors: SGP30 and CCS811
Battery: 4.2V 680mAH 14x50mm

Prototype 5: Different app interfaces was tested on people to get a better understanding of how to present the data to the customer.

Prototype 6: The final physical prototype with a case and a strap.

Components:
Arduino pro mini
Oled 128×64 (Adafruit_SSD1306)
UV sensor: ML8511 (GY-8511)
Air quality sensors: SGP30 and CCS811
Battery: 4.2V 680mAH 14x50mm
3D-printed case and strap
