Per April 1 Alessandro Bertoni is promoted to full professor in Mechanical Engineering, and will be installad as a faculty professor at the BTH academic celebration May 16.
Originally from Bergamo in Italy, Alessandro joined BTH 2014 as postdoc coming from Luleå University of Technology with a PhD in Product Innovation 2013, then becoming Docent 2019. He has at BTH been heavily involved in education, research and collaboration, here a collection of work.
What is the profiling you look at for professor?
As a professor at BTH, one of my primary focuses is integrating research, education, and industry collaboration seamlessly. In my role as professor, I should be able to bridge the boundaries of discipline-specific knowledge, fostering cross-disciplinary approaches that promote innovation in engineering, and especially in the field of product and systems design. I value openness to new ways of working and collaboration, as these are essential for driving meaningful advancements in science and creating added value in industries. For example, traditional engineering fields, such as mechanical engineering, increasingly require integrating knowledge from emerging areas like data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI). I deem the ability to combine these disciplines as crucial for both supporting innovative applied research and shaping the engineers of the future.
What do you see you bring to bth and community as a new professor in the challenging times we have now (global situation)?
The role and ethical responsibilities of a professor have evolved significantly over the centuries, transitioning from that of a guardian and interpreter of knowledge in the Middle Ages to a multifaceted professional balancing teaching, research, industry collaboration, and societal engagement in the modern era. Since the Renaissance, academia has been at the heart of scientific discourse, championing diversity and intellectual openness, while striving for the advancement of humanity across various fields.
In today’s rapidly changing global landscape, it is difficult to capture a static snapshot of a new professor’s duties and responsibilities. Academic and cultural values that once seemed immutable—such as academic freedom, ethical leadership in business, engineering, and technology, and adherence to the scientific method—are increasingly under threat from cultural and political movements that are often rooted in dogmatism, subjectivism, and pseudoscience.
For me, alongside my colleagues, it is crucial to reaffirm our role at BTH as mentors and educators for future generations. We must ground our practices in rigorous scientific knowledge and ethical responsibility, while actively contributing to society to uphold the values that have long been the foundation of the global society in which we live today.
