The MT1556 Innovative and Sustainable Product Development course became the first undergraduate course to utilize the Virtual Production Studio Lab (VPSL). This milestone occurred during the final presentations of the course’s six-week mini-product development project, where 58 students, divided into 11 teams, presented innovative ideas to enhance cycling safety.
The project aimed at creating solutions that reduce cycling accidents involving personal injury. Students explored various safety aspects, from protective devices for riders to improvements in the overall cycling experience. The final presentations challenged students to pitch their solutions in a “Dragon’s Den” format, simulating a high-stakes environment that tested the feasibility and appeal of their ideas. The showcased solutions ranged from advanced safety devices and infrastructure upgrades to innovative bicycle features.
“The VPSL truly demonstrated its versatility during these presentations,” says Marco Bertoni, course lead for MT1556. “Students experimented with different presentation formats, creatively using virtual backgrounds to enhance storytelling, effectively communicate the unique value of each solution, and strengthen their presentation skills. This experience has been valuable in testing assumptions about virtual production in education, opening new ways to communicate complex ideas effectively.”
