SPIRIT Kick-off!

SPIRIT Kick-off!

SPIRIT (Swedish Programme for Innovative Researchers Impact Training) was launched at KTH Innovation via a 3-day programme that brought all researchers together with mentors and coaches to get going. Besides all the involved universitues and managers taking care of the program, the main event was the theories, reflections and coaching from Kieran Fegan of VARA Innovation Specialists. For the coming eight-week selected researchers from universities across Sweden will receive training on how to commercialize their research.

BTH participates with a team from Product Development Research Lab / Mechanical Engineering consisting of PhD students Carl Toller Melén and Raj Jiten Machchhar, together with Professor Tobias Lasson as their mentor (Researchers join the SPIRIT Programme with a focus on Digital Twin Technology).

The reflections after the event;

The SPIRIT program has been an exciting journey so far. We had a fantastic start at the KTH Innovation office in Stockholm. Connecting with brilliant researchers from diverse fields and learning about their innovative ideas has been inspiring. The program was well-structured, with insightful presentations from experts in various fields. Overall, it has challenged me to think critically about my research and its potential real-world impact. I’m eager to collaborate with my teammates and build upon the strong foundation we have established. By understanding our target market and customer needs as a part of this program, we can increase our chances of success. I’m excited to see where this journey takes us! | Raj

Carl presenting the teams project

It was three intense and exciting days kicking off the SPIRIT program! The blend between keynotes, best practice, peer learning, and practical exercises made sure that we really got things going from day one. I am amazed at the innovation capacity that exist among researchers in Sweden. It will be fun to follow the progress of everyone both during and after the program. For myself, I look forward to see how the program will help be understand how my research can have a greater impact on society. The future weeks will be challenging and lots of fun! | Carl

The team at BTH will focus on developing an Integrated Simulation Platform as a foundation for Digital Twins in the mining industry. Such a simulation platform shall be capable of capturing the complex interdependencies and cascading effects within mining operations, enabling more informed decision-making. By simulating various operational scenarios that utilize the potential in each design level, one can identify opportunities for improvement in the operations and optimize the performance of the systems. As part of the SPIRIT Programme, the primary focus shall be exploring how such a simulation platform can be made commercially viable in the mining sector but also how it could be expanded to similar fields.

It was a great event and it will be very interesting to follow, and participate, in the journey of this team to see if it is possible to take our research and turn it into business. It is not an easy task! I think it is a milestone in our team to take on this challenge and pave the way for more research to business. Locally at BTH we are happy for the support by BTH Innovation coach Kennet Henningsson to support the journey” | Tobias
