Saab and BTH have signed an agreement for the work of Sofia Schön as an industrial PhD candidate within the mechanical engineering subject.
In a press event the collaboration agreement was signed and celebrated.
I am very pleased with this collaboration and that we are further strengthening the strategic partnership with BTH, a natural extension of the regional initiative with the Marine Technology Center. SAAB Kockums sees great opportunities in technology development within hardware/software and the increasing need to manage systems that interact with other systems, either operator-controlled and/or autonomous. This development is accelerating at a rapid pace. Therefore, we see BTH as an important partner, with its strong expertise in software, product development, and its comprehensive perspective, which is of a high international standard.

I will develop a decision-support tool for designing future mine-clearing operations by modeling and simulating mine-clearing missions. I am examining the entire mine-clearing system, where various products work together, such as ships and other surface-based systems, alongside underwater vehicles and clearance divers. It’s incredibly exciting and creative, as you need to combine tactics with technology! The idea is for the simulation to serve as decision support, illustrating how different products can collaborate to conduct mine clearance as effectively and safely as possible. Previously, I conducted similar studies on search and rescue missions for my licentiate work at Linköping University, but in that case, I focused on aerial systems that searched the ocean surface. The step into mine-clearing feels both natural and exciting, as I now get to dive into a more complex underwater environment.
I am incredibly grateful to have the chance to undertake this work, and I enjoy being an industrial PhD student since it provides the best of both worlds. I also see a promising career through Saab and BTH’s collaboration, as I want to continue working with one foot in industry and the other in academia!
