The Energy Agency has approved the project “Converge II – CONVERGE II – A Solution for Energy Distribution in Road Construction and Quarries”, totaling 51 MSEK in budget.
There is currently a lack of a satisfactory system solution for electrical energy distribution that serves a fleet of machines with 1) high utilization rates and 2) the ability to handle high loads, meaning machines that handle large tonnages and are of larger sizes, around 20-100 tons. For construction projects completed in 2030 or later, the Swedish Transport Administration aims for 100% of the total energy usage for work machines to come from renewable electricity or sustainable biofuels.
“It is nice that we can continue the exploration of energy distribution technologies together with the construction industry, and in this project potentially see a prototype solution. From BTH we look forward to the collaboration and to contribute with our simulation capabilities in this field” / Professor Tobias Larsson, BTH project leader.
The project brings together industry partners such as Volvo CE as the OEM, PEAB as the operator, the Swedish Transport Administration as the procuring authority, and three academic partners — Lund University of Technology, Blekinge Institute of Technology, and Mälardalen University—to work towards a common goal of developing a sustainable system solution for construction machinery in infrastructure development and quarries. The project is a follow-up on the pre-study CONVERGE.
