Measuring instument for detecting bad bend of the back on construction worksites
Programme:Â Mechanical Engineering
Course: MT2569 – Design Thinking
Corporate partner: Volvo Construction Equipment
Challenge: Identify problem regarding safety at construction worksites, with the focus point on datacollection.
Solution: Bending your back in an incoorect way and lift heavy tools or material could lead to serious back problems which slows down the effectiveness on the worksite. A small back bending sensor was developed to count how many times a worker bend their back during a day, it is also included a light in a pair of safety glasses to remind and warn the worker about they bend their back incorrectly. To get datta on how common it is to bend your back incorrectly at a worksite the company could use this reading to know if they need to educate further regarding posture and correct lifting technicies.
Impact: A better posture gives less sick workdays at a construnction worksites and improves effectiveness.
Prototypes: With an arduino and a tilt sensor we built a sensor that detects when you bend your back and for every bend we get a reading on it. We also added a light to a pair of safety glasses to warn the worker about the dangerous back bend. The sensor where mounted to an reflective vest, but could be mounted on other pieces of clothing.
