Challenge: The task is to use two cooperating mobile autonomous units to retrieve unsorted material from a given location and then place the different types of content in other designated locations (the right kind in the right place). The goal is to successfully place as many correctly sorted objects in the right place as possible within 10 minutes.

Solution: Sorting and transporting small balls is time-consuming and imprecise when done manually. Two collaborative autonomous robots were developed where one robot picks up unsorted balls and transfers them to the second robot, which sorts them by size and delivers them to the correct station. The system uses line following, color sensing and mechanical sorting to operate fully autonomously without any human interaction.

Impact: .

Prototypes: We built an initial LEGO prototype of the robot base to determine the size constraints and begin software development early. We learnt that the base needed to be larger for better weight distribution and stability during movement.
We laser cut a base and walls in plywood to test a more permanent structure with precise hole placements for motors and sensors. We learnt that plywood was too brittle and was replaced by MDF in the final version.
We prototyped the docking and ball transfer mechanism between the two robots using LEGO to test the handover of balls in the buffer zone. We learnt that precise positioning was critical to avoid spilling balls during transfer.
We 3D printed custom motor holders to mount the drive motors with a 1:5 gear ratio. We learnt that tolerances between gears had to be minimized to avoid delayed response from the wheels, which directly affected line following performance.
