Congratulations to the Docent title Shafiq!

Monday morning Shafiqul Islam held is trial lecture for appointment as Docent at BTH (Associate Professor).

The title of the trial lecture was “Bridging Simulation and Reality: Computational Approaches in Material and Structural Integrity”.

Some 30 people followed the lecture in the auditorium and via online link. Dean Martin Andersson introduced the session, and also afterwards awarded Shafiqul with the Docent title. Professor Tobias Larsson of Mechanical Engineering (the subject Shafiqul became docent in) awarded with flowers.

Congratulations Shafiq!

Abstract

Computational mechanics plays a vital role in predicting and optimizing material behavior and structural performance. However, challenges remain in accurately modeling complex material responses, integrating experimental and numerical results, and advancing simulation-driven design to meet industrial demands.

This lecture will explore advancements in material characterization, finite element modeling of sheet metal forming, metal joining, and packaging material failure, highlighting how computational approaches drive structural integrity, manufacturing efficiency, and sustainability. Finally, I will discuss a vision of data-driven simulations transforming modern manufacturing and engineering innovation.

Biography of Shafiqul Islam

Dr. Shafiqul Islam is an Assistant Professor (Universitetslektor) at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), specializing in computational mechanics. He received his PhD from BTH in 2019, focusing on fracture mechanics in multilayered packaging materials. Since then, Dr. Islam has led research initiatives on material characterization and constitutive modeling of sheet metal forming, advanced metal joining techniques, and failure in polymers.
