Licentiate presentation in Mechanical Engineering by Md. Shafiqul Islam

On December 9 Md. Shafiqul Islam, PhD Candidate, presented and successfully discussed his licentiate thesis in Mechanical Engineering. The title of his thesis is “Shear Fracture and Delamination in Packaging Materials: A study of experimental methods and simulation techniques.”

Md. Shafiqul Islam, Licentiate

Shafiqul has focused is work on two primary studies relating to packaging materials which consists of various laminates of paperboard, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and aluminum, as well as the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in the cap of the packages.

An overarching theme has been to provide better approaches for modelling various instances of shear fracture and to move this closer to application.

Among other things, Shafiqul and his colleagues has developed a new type of test specimen which has rendered great interest in the international standards organisation ASTM International.

Johan Tryding, Tetra Pak

Reviewer and discussion leader was Johan Tryding, who is Senior Specialist Paper at Tetra Pak. Johan highlighted both strong and weak points with the work and provided some interesting insights and suggestions for the future work.

After a thorough review and discussion of Shafiqul’s work, led by Johan, examiner Professor Tobias Larsson delivered the verdict that the licentiate thesis and presentations met the standards and it was a pass!

Sharon Kao-Walter, main supervisor, BTH

Main supervisor for Shafiqul’s work has been Professor Sharon Kao-Walter and assistant supervisor has been Christian Johansson, both of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BTH.
